· 2ND OF AUGUST, THE YEAR 2005REVELATION SPACE, BY ALASTAIR REYNOLDS
I saw this book in a bookstore, neglected to buy it, and have now obtained it for free with my shiny new Oakland Public Library card. I don’t really know what it’s about, other than the back cover contains the phrase “space opera,” which, of course, implies the requisite space ships. Yay. The plot summary on Wikipedia contains a disappointingly large number of pronouns, and the mass market paper back cover you see here has the dreaded foil embossed lettering, but perhaps it shall overcome these harbingers of suck. Time will tell.
Time told
Yeah, not so impressive. Overwrought prose, unappealing characters, didn’t hold me enough to make me want to pick up the sequels. Not a world to which I wish to escape again.
