· 5TH OF NOVEMBER, THE YEAR 2004TIME IS THE FIRE IN WHICH WE BURN
I found a Fresh Air feature on the year’s best movies, and as I was listening avidly, remembering some of my favorites while making mental notes to see others, the reviewer started talking about upcoming flicks. It was only when he mentioned Cold Mountain that I realized the feature was a year old. I am becoming increasingly and distressingly disconnected from the passage of time, and have been ever since I left school. I think it may be due to the lack of regular events and due dates, like exams, semesters, summer vacation, and also to the lack of familiar seasonality out here in CA. The relatively homogeneity of my tasks at work may also bear some of the blame. It’s a little maddening.
