BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, PLEASE!

Everyone: commence watching Battlestar Galactica. It’s on SciFi, Fridays (ugh) at 9pm. If you have any, any interest in space opera, it’s a must, and even if you don’t it’s a surprisingly well done show. Edward James Olmos as Commander Adama is captivating. I’ve rarely seen an actor so male, pock-marked, sage, vulnerable, and reticent as this guy. He’s amazingly convincing. Mary McDonnell as the President is also fantastic, and plays off Olmos really well. The other great character is Starbuck, the cigar-smoking hot shot pilot who is now a woman, which pissed off many fans. Acted with terrific charm and power by Katee Sackhoff. The other actors merely so-so, but those three good ones buoy everyone else way way up. And the effects are handled by Zoic Studios, the absolute prodigies who did Firefly. Remember the documentary-style handy-cam style shooting of all the CG space scenes in Firefly? Of course not. But if you had taken the time to watch that work of pure and unadulterated genius, you would remember the startling degree of realism that lends to the CG shots. Serenity even shows up in the background of one of the shots!

Anyway, please watch this show and don’t let it get canceled like Firefly. I need this spaceship fix to last. Let the poor writing and redundant adjectives of this post stand as a testament to my need.
