This is going to sound dumb but the ukulele is one of the sweetest, saddest instruments. It’s so small and simple, high and lonely, sort of like a tin whistle. It seems almost impossible to play it without looking ridiculous, which makes it even more sad. This epiphany was brought on by this amazing performance. Note that Jake Shimabukuro’s actual album material isn’t half this good, laced as it is exceedingly lame production and accompaniment that masks his virtuosity.
